Few words cause as much worry in Indian families as "manglik". This guide explains what it means in plain words, without fear.
What "manglik" means
In Vedic astrology, Mars (Mangal) is associated with energy and drive. A person is called manglik when Mars is in certain houses of their birth chart, most commonly the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Some astrologers check this from the ascendant (lagna) only; others also check from the Moon and Venus.
Because so many positions count, a large share of people turn out to be manglik by at least one method. It is common, not rare.
Why birth time matters
The houses depend on the ascendant, which changes roughly every two hours. Without an accurate birth time, manglik status can't be calculated reliably. If the time is unknown, a calculation from the Moon chart gives a rough indication only.
Two manglik partners
A widely followed tradition says that when both partners are manglik, the effect is considered balanced. That is why some families specifically look for a manglik match.
Cancellations
Traditional texts list many situations in which manglik dosha is considered cancelled or reduced, for example depending on the sign Mars is in or on other planetary positions. Different traditions use different lists, which is why two astrologers sometimes disagree.
Keeping perspective
Manglik status is one traditional factor. Families who are comfortable with astrology can use it as one input; it should not outweigh how two people understand and respect each other.
