A wedding budget is easier when both families agree on the total first and then decide how to split it. Here's a simple way to start.
1. Agree on a total
Sit together and decide a comfortable total, with 10% kept aside for surprises. Avoid loans for the wedding wherever you can.
2. List the main heads
- Venue and catering (usually the biggest share) - Clothes and jewellery - Decoration and flowers - Photography and video - Mehendi, haldi and sangeet - Priest, puja items and rituals - Travel and stay for guests - Invitations and gifts - Makeup and grooming
3. Decide who pays for what
Some families split by event, others by percentage. Decide openly and write it down. It prevents misunderstandings later.
4. Where families often overspend
- Guest lists that keep growing
- Last-minute decoration changes
- Gifts for very large lists
5. Track as you go
A shared spreadsheet with planned and actual columns keeps everyone on the same page.
Dowry is illegal in India under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. A wedding budget is about celebrating together, never about demands.
