In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, families usually match horoscopes with porutham (also called thirumana porutham) rather than the 36-guna system. It compares the birth stars (nakshatras) of the two people across ten checks.
The ten poruthams
| Porutham | What it traditionally looks at |
|---|---|
| Dina | Day-to-day harmony |
| Gana | Temperament |
| Mahendra | Growth and well-being of the family |
| Stree Deergha | Long, steady companionship |
| Yoni | Nature and intimacy |
| Rasi | Compatibility of moon signs |
| Rasi Athipathi | Friendship of the moon-sign lords |
| Vasya | Mutual attraction |
| Rajju | Traditionally given special importance |
| Vedha | Checks for traditionally "obstructing" star pairs |
Each porutham is usually marked as matching or not matching, and many families count how many of the ten match.
Rajju and Vedha
Many families treat Rajju as especially important and look carefully when it doesn't match. Vedha is also often checked separately. Practices differ between communities and priests.
Perspective
Porutham is a tradition families value. It's one input, alongside education, values, family expectations and, most of all, the conversation between two people.
