The Hindu biodata, section by section
A Hindu marriage biodata follows the same order as any biodata. What makes it Hindu is a handful of lines that the other family will look for first, often before they read the name properly.
The blessing
Most families begin with ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥ because Ganesha is invoked before any auspicious beginning. Others write Om, a line to their family deity (kuldevi or kuldevta), or nothing. It is a matter of family custom, not a rule.
Gotra and kuldevi or kuldevta
Gotra traces the father's lineage, and many Hindu families avoid marriage within the same gotra. Some families also write the mother's gotra, or the gotras to avoid. If your community follows a family deity, a line such as "Kuldevi: Jeen Mata" is common and helps families from the same tradition recognise you.
These lines are optional. If your family doesn't follow them, leave them out without apology.
Horoscope details
For families who match kundlis, this is the section that decides whether the conversation continues. Include:
- Rashi (moon sign) and nakshatra with charan
- Manglik status: yes, no, partial, or not checked
- The exact time and place of birth, so the full chart can be made
Guna Milan scores out of 36 come from the nakshatras of both people, so rashi alone isn't enough. If you don't know the birth time, say so; many families still go ahead with a name and date match or skip matching altogether.
Family and native place
Hindu families often place the family section high: parents' names and work, brothers and sisters, joint or nuclear family, and native place (the town the family comes from, even if they live elsewhere now). Native place matters because it tells the other family about language, customs and food at home.
About me and expectations
Write two or three warm lines about the person, then what the family hopes for. Vegetarian families usually say so here ("looking for a vegetarian family"), which is perfectly fine and saves time on both sides.
What not to write
- Caste rankings or "high caste" descriptions: they put good families off
- Complexion and weight
- A long list of every relative: one or two close ones is enough
- Dowry or "demands" of any kind: dowry is illegal in India and has no place on a biodata
Hindu biodata designs
Families usually choose a design with a temple border, a royal arch or devotional art such as Shubh Ganesh or Shiv Parvati. Every design keeps the same details, so you can switch until it feels right.
