The Buddhist biodata format

A Buddhist marriage biodata follows the usual order (personal details, education and work, family, about me, contact) and leaves out the horoscope section. Families look closely at values and education.

Opening line

Namo Buddhaya or Buddham Saranam Gacchami at the top is common, sometimes with a small image of the Buddha or the Dhamma Chakra. Ambedkarite families often add "Jai Bhim". It is optional.

Tradition

Write the tradition in one line:

  • Navayana (Ambedkarite) Buddhist: most Buddhist families in Maharashtra and many across India
  • Theravada: for example Barua families in Bengal and the North-East
  • Mahayana or Vajrayana: common in Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal

Education and work

Education is often given special importance in Buddhist families, especially Ambedkarite families who value Babasaheb's call to "educate, agitate, organise". Write the highest qualification clearly, and the current work and city.

Family and native place

Parents' names and work, brothers and sisters, family type and native place. Many families also mention the vihara they are associated with.

Values

The about-me is where values show: how the person spends time, what they care about and the life they hope for. Mentions of Buddha Purnima, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din or community service fit naturally here.

Partner expectations

Values and education usually come first: "progressive, well-educated, from a Buddhist family" or simply "with similar values". If an inter-faith marriage is acceptable, say so.

Questions families ask

What is included in a Buddhist marriage biodata?

Name, date and place of birth, height, Buddhist tradition, education and work, family details and native place, a few lines about the person and their values, partner expectations, a photo and a contact. Horoscope details are usually left out.

What goes at the top of a Buddhist biodata?

"Namo Buddhaya", "Buddham Saranam Gacchami", a small image of the Buddha or the Dhamma Chakra are all common. Some families start with the name."

Do Buddhist families match kundlis?

Most Buddhist families in India, especially Ambedkarite Buddhists, do not use kundli matching, so the horoscope section is left out. Some Himalayan Buddhist families consult their own astrological traditions; add birth time if yours does.

Should the biodata mention the Buddhist tradition?

It helps. Navayana (Ambedkarite), Theravada or Mahayana and Vajrayana (common in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal) tell families about practice and community.

How are Buddhist weddings performed?

Many families hold the wedding at a vihara with Buddhist rites, the Tisarana and Panchasila, often in front of an image of the Buddha and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The biodata needs no details of this; it can be discussed later.
